This is a Christ-centered, college-preparatory, junior high school, science course taught in a 33-week, school-year-block schedule. This course utilizes the Exploring Creation with General Science, 2nd Edition, textbook by Dr. Jay L. Wile and its accompanying Solutions Manual. There are 16 modules to complete; hence, the student will finish one module every two weeks.
This course is designed for seventh grade home educated students, although it can be used for eighth graders as well. Following the Apologia Ministries text of the same name, the course is designed to be a student's first systematic introduction to science. Its scope is wide, covering such topics as the scientific method, designing experiments, simple machines, archaeology, geology, paleontology, biology, and human anatomy and physiology.
The course employs experiments designed to be done at home. Students perform 52 required lab activities during the 33-week session. Labs include simple experiments using household items (required, see link below). Students who have limited experience with writing reports and completing comprehensive written exams that require mastery of course material might find this course particularly challenging. However, the study skills required for this course are essential for success in high school and beyond.
Students must complete 20 – 25 pages of reading per module, one parent-graded set of module study guide questions, all required module experiment activities (to be recorded in a parent-checked and instructor recorded paper and ink laboratory report notebook), and an online instructor-graded module test at the end of each module. There will also be an online instructor-graded semester exam at the end of each semester and a quarterly formal lab report submission required.
Semester grades for the course will be determined by the number of required labs completed and grade obtained on the two quarterly formal lab report submissions (25% of total grade), online module test scores (50%), and online comprehensive semester exam standing (25%). There will be online 1st and 2nd semester grade cards produced. Students will meet with the instructor once per week for 90 minutes in an interactive video conference using web conferencing software.
Cost of the course is approximately $400 ($13 per 90 minute session): computer, Internet, textbooks, and lab equipment costs are not included. There is no refund of tuition should a student miss a class or should the corporate Internet system fail.
